FAQs About Our Smart Solar Lights
Frequently Asked Questions
SMART public lighting is what we refer to as advanced, intelligent lighting solutions that are powered by the energy of the sun. Commonly known as solar lighting, we position our systems as much more, with adaptive intelligence, advanced patented Lithium-ion battery technology and off-site wireless control that allows users to remotely monitor and configure the lighting system from anywhere in the world.
Sustainable – Environmentally friendly solutions that require no power from the grid.
Modern – Aesthetically pleasing innovative and technical functionality.
Adaptable – Can be installed where power is not available.
Robust – Dependable performance through electricity blackouts & brownouts.
Technology – Advanced innovation that intelligently reacts to its surrounding environment.
As every project differs in size and specifics there is not a set price per light. However, as a rule of thumb we can fully supply and install 3 engineered and compliant grid-free lighting systems for under $10,000.
Solar PV Panels are made of a semiconductor material like silicon, along with phosphorous and boron which create conductivity within the cell and activate the movement of electrons. When activated by the sunlight’s energy, the electrons move across the cell and into the electrical circuit attached to the solar panel.
Each project needs to meet specific lighting compliance to match the application. This means the type of light chosen for each project will be determined by the Australian Lighting Standards guidelines. Leadsun provides an engineered solution by adopting best practice for all lighting projects to ensure compliance with AS/NZS 1158.3.1:2020 is met. Our systems are sized appropriately to ensure the solar panel to battery ratio can provide at least 3 days battery autonomy to maintain the minimum lighting levels within the application at all times.
As each project would differ in size, the installation cost would vary based on application and design. However, as there is no underground cabling and expensive machinery required for SMART public lighting, the installation costs are a quarter of what the same grid-powered lighting project would cost.
As there are no electricity works to factor in, or underground cabling required, the installation time for a SMART public lighting system is significantly faster than a grid-powered lighting equivalent. As a comparison, a 1km pedestrian pathway with a P2/P4 lighting compliance would take a traditional grid-powered approximately 12 weeks to install, compared to just 2 weeks for the same project using a SMART public lighting solution.
With so many inferior products entering the market now it is recommended that you look at a few factors before deciding which lighting solution to go with. The first and most important thing to consider is the type and quality of battery in the heart of the system. Battery technology has come a long way over recent times and Lithium-ion batteries are a must to obtain the longest life from your lighting solution. Secondly you will want to look at the build quality to know that your lights will be robust and dependable for years to come. This is most easily determined by proof of concept. Simply ask your provider how long they have been in the industry and an example of a project they can show you that is still running.
Solar panels will still charge on a cloudy day, however as the clouds are diffusing the strength of the sunlight the charge will be less. Leadsun systems are sized appropriately to ensure the solar panel to battery ratio can provide at least 3 days battery autonomy to maintain the minimum lighting levels within the application at all times.
With the advancement of solar technology and battery life, Leadsun guarantee’s that our technology and patented battery technology will match and better any other lighting solution on the market without requiring power from the electricity grid.
Leadsun’s SMART public lighting features a more efficient mono PV panel, a LiFePO4 lithium battery that last twice as long as anything else available, and extended battery guarantee for LGA partnerships, smart controller and PIR motion sensor technology. Plus, with our EZY-pole technology installation times are incredibly fast and have no disruption to the project site while systems are installed.

Solar photovoltaic panels require little maintenance—no washing or dusting is required. It is, however, important to place panels where they will remain relatively clear of shade and large debris.
LED lights are 30-50% more efficient than most traditional streetlights.
LEDs are light-emitting diodes, or electronic components that produce light by converting electrical energy directly to light by the movement of electrons within the material of the diode. Because LEDs are highly efficient, they are beginning to replace most conventional light sources.
LEDs have no gases, filaments or other moving parts. They provide light through a one-step process that takes place within the diode. You don’t have to worry about broken glass or other parts breaking or coming loose.
The term solid-state lighting is used because the electronics produce light directly from solid materials in which the electrons are embedded. This is unlike other technologies; for example, fluorescent technology requires a gaseous discharge medium to initiate production of light.
LEDs have no gases, filaments or other moving parts. They provide light through a one-step process that takes place within the diode. You don’t have to worry about broken glass or other parts breaking or coming loose.
Leadsun’s SMART Controller offer flexible accessibility, as intelligent power adjustment function automatically modifies power discharge according to the remaining energy, allowing it to prolong the lighting time. This in turn provides effective a more effective method of lighting control, which minimizes energy consumption and provide greater battery autonomy and operational reliability.
The only way to get full power out of high voltage grid tie solar panels is to use an MPPT controller. Since most MPPT controls can take up to 150 volts DC (some can go up to 600 VDC) on the solar panel input side, you can often series two or more of the high voltage panels to reduce wire losses or use smaller wires. With the 175-watt panel mentioned above, putting two of them in a series would give you 66 volts at 7.6 amps into the MPPT controller, but the controller would convert that to about 29 amps at 12 volts.
A lithium-ion battery is a rechargeable battery in which lithium ions move from the negative electrode to the positive electrode during discharge and back when charging. Leadsun uses new-generation Lithium LiFePO4 batteries which are a custom-built design that provides three times more storage and power capacity compared to traditional Lead Acid batteries. Our patented ground-breaking battery technology can DOUBLE the normal life expectancy of any other traditional Lithium battery system by never fully charging or discharging its cells. This prevents unnecessary full range operating which reduces stress and lengthens the cycle life of the battery.
Typically, a Lithium-ion battery will last between five to eight years. However, with Leadsun’s patented, advanced battery technology we’ve seen them enduring beyond a decade.
There is minimal maintenance required on a SMART public lighting system as they easy to monitor with wireless technology and if anything does need attention our lowerable pole technology makes accessing the technology at the top of the pole easy if necessary.
