High-power Road Lighting and Road Safety

High Power Road Lights for Category V Roads

Lighting Without Limits

Solar street lighting used to be limited to smaller applications like local streets and pathways, but not anymore. Today, advances in technology mean solar is now lighting our major roads and highways too. Leadsun solar road lights are powerful and dependable, complying with strict Category V lighting standards for Australian freeways, arterials, and major roads with all the added benefits solar brings.

What is high powered solar road lighting?

Category V Road Lighting

High-powered road lights are used throughout Australia to illuminate major roads like freeways, highways, arterials and collector roads. Category V road lighting is the class of roadway illumination designed primarily to meet the visual needs of motorists on  high-speed or high-volume traffic routes like these. It splits roads into different subcategories based on traffic volume and speed including Category V3 for fast motorways, freeways, and major regional links and Categories V4 – V5 for smaller local distributor roads.

The Rise of Solar Road Lighting

Solar roadway lighting is the same as traditional street lighting  except that it runs completely off-grid. A solar engine attached to the light pole captures and stores energy from the sun and uses it to power an ultra bright LED luminaire at night.

Advances in solar and battery technology mean solar road lights can now perform just as capably as grid-connected lights. However they don’t require trenching or cabling and don’t need to be connected to the electricity grid, so they can be installed in a fraction of the time it usually takes and can cost considerably less.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

High-powered solar road lighting is an off-grid lighting solution designed for larger and more demanding road applications, including arterial roads, intersections, high-speed roads and other major transport infrastructure.

Unlike conventional solar street lighting designed for lower-volume roads or pathways, high-powered systems are engineered around the specific lighting requirements of the road, with solar generation, battery storage, luminaire output and system autonomy sized to suit the application.

Yes, solar lighting can be considered for highway and major road applications in Australia, provided the system is specifically designed for the site’s lighting, safety, environmental and operational requirements.

Suitability depends on factors including the required road lighting category, photometric performance, available solar resource, pole positioning, battery autonomy and site conditions. Each project should be assessed individually rather than assuming a standard solar street light will be suitable.

Solar road lighting can be designed for applications requiring Category V lighting, but compliance depends on the performance of the complete lighting design, not simply whether the luminaire is solar powered.

The design needs to consider the applicable requirements of AS/NZS 1158, including photometric performance, road geometry, luminaire selection and placement. Leadsun can provide lighting layouts, photometric data and IES files to support project assessment and specification.

This is one of the highest-priority questions in the AIO research because it directly addresses how engineers and councils are likely to assess HPRL.

Solar lighting may be suitable for V3 road lighting applications when the complete system and lighting design can achieve the required photometric performance for the project.

Achieving V3 requirements depends on factors such as road geometry, luminaire output and distribution, mounting height, pole spacing, solar availability and battery capacity. A project-specific lighting and solar assessment is therefore required before suitability can be confirmed.

High-powered solar road lighting can be suitable for arterial and high-speed roads where the required lighting performance can be achieved through a properly engineered system.

These applications typically require significantly more consideration than residential or local street lighting, including higher light output, road geometry, pole spacing, battery autonomy and compliance requirements. Photometric modelling should be used to determine whether solar is appropriate for the particular road.

Yes. Solar lighting can be particularly useful at highway, rural and remote intersections where extending mains electrical infrastructure may be difficult, disruptive or expensive.

Because each pole can operate independently of the electricity grid, solar can provide a lighting option without extensive trenching and cabling. The system still needs to be designed around the intersection geometry, required lighting performance, solar conditions and applicable standards.

No. A fully off-grid solar road lighting system generates and stores its own energy at each lighting location, removing the need for a mains electricity connection.

This can significantly reduce the civil and electrical infrastructure associated with conventional road lighting, particularly where projects would otherwise require long cable runs, trenching, switchboards or new grid connections.

Solar road lighting can become particularly cost-effective where connecting to the electricity grid requires substantial trenching, cabling, electrical infrastructure or works across difficult terrain.

The best comparison is based on the total project cost, rather than the purchase price of the light alone. Site access, installation, civil works, grid connection costs, ongoing electricity, maintenance and the required lighting performance should all be considered.

A properly designed solar road lighting system should account for seasonal changes in solar availability and periods of poor weather.

Battery capacity, solar panel sizing, energy consumption and system controls are assessed together to provide the required autonomy for the site. Because solar conditions vary by location, system sizing should be based on project-specific environmental data rather than a standard configuration.

There is no single autonomy requirement that suits every high-powered road lighting project. Battery capacity should be engineered around the required operating hours, lighting output, local solar conditions and expected periods of low solar generation.

For critical road applications, autonomy and energy modelling form an important part of assessing whether an off-grid system can reliably deliver the required lighting performance throughout the year.

Solar road lighting is not suitable for every highway project. Constraints can include insufficient solar exposure, shading, very high lighting demands, limited space for solar equipment or site conditions that make the required system impractical.

That is why high-powered solar road lighting should be treated as an engineered infrastructure solution rather than a direct one-for-one replacement for every mains-powered road light.

A feasibility assessment typically starts with the road type and geometry, required lighting category, operating profile, location, available solar exposure and any project-specific constraints.

From there, lighting layouts, photometric modelling, luminaire requirements, solar generation, battery autonomy, pole locations and installation conditions can be assessed to determine whether high-powered solar road lighting is suitable.
