River Valley Stairs Solar Bollard Lights

River Valley Stairs Solar Bollard Lights

Established on the banks of the Maribyrnong River in Victoria’s Sunshine North, The River Valley Estate promises residents a life deeply rooted in nature. The estate boasts over 5.5 kilometers of shared use pathways, access to the river, multiple parks and green spaces complimented by environmentally sustainable

Outdoor pathway lighting needed for greater safety

The River Valley Estate was named because of its close proximity to the Maribyrnong River. With the river being such a focal point for the estate, the River Valley Stairs became a vital part of the masterplan, providing residents with pedestrian access directly to the river.

Senior Landscape Designer for the project, Jordan Kuiti from Tract Landscape Architecture said, “The development is located on very steep topography with a river corridor, with a shared path at the base. The [River Valley Stairs] allows for more pedestrian connectivity through the blocks to allow access to the river”.

The installation of solar bollard lights was a safety consideration first and foremost. “Given the steep topography and constricted nature of the pedestrian link we thought lighting was required to increase safety”, he said.

Project Challenges

Limited access to services

Unfortunately, the location of the stairs meant that there was no convenient access to the electricity grid, making conventional mains powered lighting prohibitively expensive. In addition, the design team wanted the stairs to be well-lit without having to install obtrusive electricity meters or utility boxes.

Leadsun Solar Bollard Lights the Smart Solution

Realising early on that a smarter, off-grid solution was needed, the design team collaborated with Leadsun lighting engineers on the project. Eleven solar bollard lights were specified and installed by Leadsun along the length of the stairs, powered by two north facing AE6 solar engines discretely mounted on poles for maximum access to sunlight. Each solar engine includes a solar module (panel) and onboard battery so no connection to the electricity grid was required and no unsightly electricity meters or utility boxes were required at ground level.

Take Me to the River

The River Valley Stairs provide a vital link to the Maribyrnong river for River Valley Estate residents and help the estate to deliver on its promise of a life deeply rooted in nature. Thanks to Leadsun solar bollard lighting, that promise now rings true, day or night, and in more ways than one with 100% renewable, zero emissions solar path lights.

Reflecting on the project, Jordan Kuiti said “the lighting is performing well, the client is happy and so far, there has been no issue with maintenance”.

Leadsun Business Development Manager, Jamie Mackenzie remarked that this was yet another project where solar powered lighting was clearly the best solution. “Leadsun solar bollard lights outshone all the alternatives—they just made sense from an environmental and financial perspective,” he said.
