Project Overview

In June 2012, the City of Boroondara was looking for a long term lighting solution for a 400-metre section of shared pathway along Gardiner’s Creek Trail. Due to an increase of busy commuters along this popular trail, the council identified that providing a reliable source of lighting would not only extend the hours of use, it would also provide a safer environment for those who use it during peak periods in the evenings and early mornings.

The 17km long Gardiner’s Creek shared pathway trail in Melbourne’s inner south-eastern suburbs provides a critical transport link for cyclists and pedestrians to access public transport as well as connecting recreation facilities to the adjoining communities.  As the pathway accommodates thousands of commuters each day and night, reliable lighting that provided P2 compliance during peak times was critically important as well as an installation process that did not cause disruption to the pathway during daytime hours caused by trenching and use of heavy vehicle equipment.

Leadsun Solution

  • 42 AE6S160 solar lights
  • Solar Module Size = 160W
  • LED output = 10W
  • Adaptive lighting control automatically dims lights during inactivity
  • Lithium-ion batteries provide 10+ years maintenance-free life span

The design also featured Leadsun’s unique SMART eye PIR activated adaptive lighting system and a programmable controller that optimised the lighting levels during the night to ensure the intensity of light automatically matched the peak times of cyclists and pedestrians using the night. The ease of installation along with best-in-class and innovative adaptive lighting controls ensured a fast and cost-effective installation without any disruption to the public during the entire construction process.

Leadsun were able to design and engineer a grid & cable-free solution using the latest AE6 solar lighting technology featuring simple to install plug & play wiring with all equipment mounted in a modular solar / battery unit at the top of the pole which easily attached to a LED fixture.  Additionally, Leadsun was able to design the very first and patented EZYwinch lowerable pole system that enabled full installation/service of the pole and solar lighting equipment at ground level without any use of heavy lifting equipment or cranes, etc.

Eight years on, and thanks to Leadsun’s patented battery management system and best-in-class technology, the lights are still going strong and have only required basic service to clean the solar panels and LED fixtures to ensure optimal performance.
